The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is a shiny tie, an impeccably tailored vest and all eyes riveted on you as you stride into the afternoon poker news ball.
Have something you'd like to see in a future 3-Bet? Drop us a note in the comments.
Today in the 3-Bet we find Matt Berkey taking the Super High Roller Bowl by storm, Jason Mercier feels good heading into the WSOP and Eugene Katchalov and PokerStars part ways.
1) Berkey Riding High
The ultra-prestigious $300k Super High Roller Bowl at Aria is down to its final 16 players with just 7 to be paid and only one claiming the $5m prize up top.
Erik Seidel is second in chips. Jason Mercier is in the Top 5. Fedor Holz, Phil Hellmuth and Phil Galfond are all still alive.
Who's everybody talking about? Matt Berkey, of course.
You might remember Berkey as one of Russell Thomas' training stand-ins in Jason Somerville's The Final Table doc from 2012, but of course his poker pedigree goes well beyond that.
With $1.7m in live tournament earnings and cashes dating back to 2006 Berkey's obviously been around the game and excelled for a long, long time. His true vocation, though, is cash games and he's a regular in the $300/$600/$1,200 game at the Aria.
He doesn't have all of his action in this one but with 2.8m in chips (out front of Seidel's 1.3m), he's been an action hero so far and it'll be interesting to see if he can hold on today.
Check this clip from Poker Central below when he registered for the event back in February. Tune in to Poker Central's Twitch channel for live action for the Super High Roller Bowl starting at 2 PM PT today.
2) Bet Against Mercier at Your Own Peril
After all of the "bad reg" talk surrounding Jason Mercier over the past week it's pretty fitting he's top 5 in chips in the Aria Super High Roller Bowl.
The guy who started all the talk, Doug Polk, has also long been on the rail.
Mercier doesn't boast about his abilities very often but when challenged by those who claim he's just "run good" for the past 8 years or so his hackles do come up a bit.
His confidence in his game is well earned, though, and he continually puts his own money on the line to prove it.
He famously put a ton of money on himself (to no avail) in the 2013 WSOP and it looks like he's doing it again for 2016:
Looking to get 3 to 1 on winning a bracelet this Wsop (Vegas only) any takers? Lmk, will need escrow / post if I don't know u well etc
— Jason Mercier (@JasonMercier) May 31, 2016Oh I'll also do myself vs any player to win a bracelet ... Will cap the action on certain players, but everyone is avail at 1st#ComeNgetIt
— Jason Mercier (@JasonMercier) May 31, 2016He's had at least a few takers so far, and we'd expect Polk & the Gang will also pony up. Someone who doesn't want to try his luck against Mercier, though:
I'll do myself vs anyone except Mercier who win more #WSOP bracelets this year. If both got same amount (0-0, 1-1, 2-2...) bet is off. DM me
— Dzmitry Urbanovich (@Urbanovich_Dima) May 31, 2016We side with Urbanovich on this one.
3) Eugene Katchalov and PokerStars Part Ways
After five years and some incredible progress for poker in the Ukraine, Eugene Katchalov will no longer be a Team PokerStars Pro after tomorrow:
Some news about me ... http://pic.twitter.com/cWFlf8Rt38
— Eugene Katchalov (@EugeneKatchalov) May 31, 2016A positive and inspiring voice for poker over the past five years, we also hope to see a lot more from Katchalov in poker including as a part of the LA Sunset in the Global Poker League.
