One of the highest buy-in and most watched tournaments of the entire year got underway in Vegas yesterday.
49 players took their seats in the $300k Super High Roller Bowl at the Aria and, under the bright lights of CBS Sports, 35 managed to survive to Day 2.
Leading the way is Russian Timofey "Trueteller" Kuznetsov, last year's fourth-place finisher in this event (when the buy-in was an even bigger $500k).
Also running up big stacks were German GPL superstar Fedor Holz, all-time leading money winner Daniel Negreanu, businessman Bill Perkins and poker pros Dan Colman, Matt Berkey, Phil Galfond and Jason Mericer.
Esfandiari Out First; Nitsche Hangs On
The first player to be eliminated yesterday, surprisingly, was veteran pro Antonio Esfandiari, who's been known to do fairly well in huge buy-in tournaments in the past.
After chipping down early Esfandiari didn't even make it out of the first level with his queens falling to friend Brian Rast's AK in a race.
Following Esfandiari out the door on Day 1 were Igor Kurganov and Isaac Haxton as well as Christoph Vogelsang and Scott Seiver.
Squeaking through to Day 2 at the bottom of the counts were 888poker pro Dominik Nitsche, former spelling bee champ Pratyush Buddiga and GPI #1 Byron Kaverman.
Also making it through with over starting stack was Phil Hellmuth, who gleefully exclaimed on Twitter he was "never close" to being all in all day.
