Efforts to legalize online poker in New York have once again fallen short with the current legislative session coming to an end.
Sen. John Bonacic’s online bill gained some momentum last week when it passed the NY senate by a vote of 53-5 but it didn’t get through the assembly.
Online poker fans will now have to wait until the next legislative session to get another chance at legalizing and regulating the game.
While its a definite blow for online poker in the state the pieces are certainly in place for a more positive outcome when the legislative session returns in 2017.
Daily Fantasy Sports Passes
Poker may not have passed through assembly but a bill that would legalize and regulate DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) did.
A DFS bill passed both the assembly and senate and will now head to NY Governor Andrew Cuomo’s desk. If the bill is signed by the governor the bill would become law.
That likely means that DFS giants FanDuel and DraftKings will be returning to the state shortly.
With legal online poker in NY off the table for 2017 the attention now turns to the other massive market: California.
The Modesto Bee published an Op Ed by the Poker Players Alliance that champions Adam Gray’s bill in the state.
AB 2863 would legalize and regulate online poker in California with advanced age verification software to prevent underage gambling.
The bill is still awaiting a vote.
