The Global Poker League swept into Las Vegas two weeks ago to begin its 33-day Summer Series and this week sweeps have been the name of the game.
Debuting its signature playing arena, The Cube, and introducing cross-conference play for the first time the expectation was for a bit of a feeling out process and plenty of even matches.
The opposite has turned out to be true as the Americas Conference has steamrolled the EurAsia conference won all but one of the 11 matches so far.
And this week in particular has seen an onslaught of 3-0 sweeps with Thiago Nishijima, Randy Lew (the only EurAsian winner) and new GPI #1 Fedor Holz all pulling off the nine-point wipeouts.
Holz Now #1 Scorer on GPL, Too
Has anyone got off to a better start in his or her poker career than Fedor Holz?
Fellow German Ole Schemion, Poland's Dzmitry Urbanovich and Dan Colman all come to mind but for the time being it seems that nothing will ever stop Holz from continuing his dominance.
Just 22 years old Holz has a laundry list of accomplishments that makes most pros 10 years his senior pale. He's earned over $10m in just the last six months alone, with $4.6m of it coming in just the last few weeks.
He's #1 on Germany's all-time live money list, won a WCOOP Main Event for $1.3m and, for kicks, finished 25th in last year's WSOP Main Event.
As if that wasn't enough he's also taken over the #1 ranking on the Global Poker Index and, with today's sweep of Sorel Mizzi in The Cube, he's now the #1 scorer in the GPL with 50 points.
In short: it must be nice to be Fedor Holz.
As a result of Holz's dominance the LA Sunset have also drawn to within 11 points of the table leading Montreal Nationals, who benefitted from a sweep by Martin Jacobson last week.
Galfond, Duhamel Next in GPL Doubleheader
Wrapping up Week #2 of the Summer Series is a doubleheader of action tomorrow featuring on of the surprising under-performers on the GPL, Phil Galfond.
Despite his impressive hand analysis he hasn't been fortunate with the cards and has only scores 4 points for the struggling San Francisco Rush.
He'll face Rome Emperor Walter Treccarichi in the early match tomorrow while Duhamel will battle Moscow's Andrey Pateychuk after.
